With machines such as the Apple II, the 2nd generation of microcomputers was begun. Prior to this, it was largely kit machines which had to be assembled by the buyer, such as the Altair 8800 and Mark-8. Now it was possible to walk into a computer store and buy a machine that was usable right out of the box!
